Lower Dolpo Phoksundo Lake Trekking is an adventure of two weeks around Nepal’s largest Shey-Phoksundo National Park. The walk takes you to remote pockets of Far Western Nepal on a less ventured route. Where few groups of trekkers seldom visit the beautiful country of Lower Dolpo and emerald-colored Phoksundo Lake. The adventure to Lower Dolpo Phoksundo Lake begins with a sweeping scenic flight to land at Jhupal’s unique small airport. The walk follows the scenic trail to beautiful Phoksundo Lake at a lovely Ringmo Village. Have time to explore its picturesque surroundings of rolling green hills covered in blue pines with views of snow-capped peaks. After an enjoyable and wonderful time at Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo Village, the walk follows toward the remote mountain wilderness.

Adventure then leads to traverse two high passes of Baga-La and Numa-La, climbing on steep slopes. The effort of hard climbing rewards you with a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding snow-capped peaks of Kagmara and Kanjiroba Himal. As far as Dhaulagiri Himal ranges towards the Far East above the spectacular Dolpo landscapes. After walking around Baga-La and Namun-La Passes for a few days in sheer wilderness, away from human habitation. From, here the walk follows the main trail to reach Dho-Tarap River Valley and the large village of Dho-Tarap.

It is an interesting village to explore the immense cultures of Buddhists and Bon the ancient pre-sect Buddhism. The walk follows the beautiful Dho Tarap River Valley to enter an exciting deep gorge. The area is well hidden from the outside world, an amazing and wild area with chances of spotting some wildlife. After walking for a few days within the enclosed river gorge, and then the trail heading towards open, exposed areas. To reach the impressive village of Tarakot, a historical fortress village in the early days.

Where the Trans Himalayan caravan and salt trade route of Tibet and Nepal passed through Tarakot Village. From Tarakot, slowly adventures end on reaching Dunai, the headquarters town of Dolpo. Completing the walk at Dunai, then taking a short drive to Jhupal for the last overnight around Dolpo. The next morning, a sweeping scenic flight brings you back to Kathmandu, after a mesmerizing experience on Lower Dolpo Phoksundo Lake Trekking.

Lower Dolpo Phoksundo Lake Trek Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport you will be well received by our staff and guide and then transfer you to your hotels within the hub of Kathmandu city around the most happening and exciting place around Thamel. After checking into your rooms with refreshment our guides will brief regarding Lower Dolpo Phokshindo Lake Trekking. Evening welcome dinner in a nice authentic Nepalese restaurant with culture show.

Morning free with leisure time for breakfast and preparations for Lower Dolpo Phokshindo Lake Trek. Afternoon as time for flight to Nepalgunj, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for scenic flight of less than an hour. During air-borne panorama of the Himalayan peaks from Langtang, Ganesh, Manaslu and Annapurna to Dhaulagiri Himalayan range. As the flight lands at airport and transfer to a nice hotels close to the airport or around the city area.

Early morning breakfast for connecting short flight to Jhupal around Dolpo. A short drive to Nepalgunj airport, then get board in a small aircraft for scenic flight to Jhupal. Takes approx. 40 minutes to land at Jhupal in Dolpo, our staff and guide receives you at Jhupal airport. After getting organized then start the trek following the main trail. The route leads en route Chhepka to a small farm area for first overnight in tented camp. Located close to Dunai Town the headquarters of Dolpo district.

After first overnight in tented camp, enjoy the breakfast prepared by our camping cook and kitchen staff. Morning walk starts to follow a ridge above Phoksundo River valley. The views gets better facing peaks of Kagmara Himal, and then downhill through farm villages. The trail follows near Dhera a small cattle herder place, and climb to Raha-Gaon, populated by the Hindu Thakuri tribes. The walk continues into a nice forest to reach Chhepka for overnight camp, close to the village.

The morning walk starts from Chepka village with short climb and down to a river bank. The uphill continues on leaving the forest to reach a high ridge, then follows downhill path reaching back into the forest. From here the walk along the river to Ryajik village. Then arriving our overnight camp at Samduwa close to the entrance of Shey-Phoksundo National Park.

Today’s adventure leads to our first highlight of the journey from Samduwa to Ringmo village. Located close by the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, morning walk follows the river bank. Then climb begins for an hour to reach the Nepal Army Camp, serves as warden for the Shey-Phoksundo National Park. From here walk towards Pungmo and Phoksundo River, after good walk of few hours reaching Ringmo village. Either spend overnights in a lodge or in tented camping. Close to Phoksundo Lake, enjoy the views of the cascading waterfall, as it flows from high Phoksundo River.

Enjoy the rest day on the main highlights of the adventure at Phokshindo Lake amidst beautiful scenery backdrops. Explore the magnificent location, and perfect height for acclimatization, before the climb to Baga-La and Numa-La Passes. Take a short hike around the Lake, also called as Ringmo Lake, surrounded by beautiful blue pine tree. As well as observe the interesting cultures of Bon and Buddhism religions.

After an enjoyable time in Ringmo and Phoksundo Lake, adventure starts heading towards remote, isolated corners of Dolpo. Walk within sheer mountain wilderness and away from villages and human settlements for few days. The walk leads into forested trail with nice meadows and pasture fields of the Yaks and cattle. As walk reach close to the bottom of Baga-La Pass a nice grassy field to set our tented camp. This area is called as Timche by the local cattle and Yak herders.

An early morning start, after a good breakfast for the long steep climb to cross over Baga-La Pass. Enjoy the tough climb towards the first pass of the adventure. The climb stats following a steep slope for few hours to reach on top of Baga-La. From the top enjoy the magnificent views of Phoksundo Lake, Kagmara and Kanjiroba peaks. After a refreshing stop, then head downhill to the other side of Baga-La base for overnight camp. Which is close to Numa La Pass, the camp is set on a nice meadow. This serene location is called Danigar, a Yak herder’s shelters for grazing cattle.

Another last pass to cross and the highest point of the adventure, after a good breakfast, start with short gradual walk. On reaching the base of Numa-La Pass, start climbing for few hours to the top of Numa-La Pass. From the highest spot, enjoy the glorious scenery of snow-capped peaks with beautiful landscapes. Includes distant views of Dhaulagiri Himal range towards the east horizon. After an exciting moments completing the both high passes, walk downhill to the base of Numa-La for overnight camp.

After a great experience traverse of two high passes around serene wilderness, the route follows to Dho-Tarap village. Morning starts with gradual winding path, the trail leads through dense pine and fir trees. After a pleasant walk, then reach to a wide open area and cross Tarap Chu River. A short walk leads to large village of Dho Tarap inhabited by mixed mountain tribes of Tibetan origin. As well as Magar people, the main hill tribes of western Nepal. Overnight either in local lodge or spend in a tented camp, close to the village farm land. Rest of the day explore the village and its old interesting monastery.

Leaving Dho Tarap, morning starts towards a wide Tarap Valley, the walk follows along Tarap Chu River. Which later joins at Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village, the route leads to an interesting place of Langa gorge. Facing beautiful waterfalls, as trail heads to smaller settlements of Sisal and Kesila. Which is a Yak herder’s temporary shelter, where our overnight camp is set. This area is called Gyagar, an isolated place within a river gorge.

From this exciting gorge of Langa, moving further towards a narrow gorge. The walk leads to a small path with few vegetation of juniper and wild rose bushes. The trek continues to reach a place with a large overhanging cave, the area is called Tol-Tol. Chances of spotting some wildlife, like mountain goats and blur sheep. The walk continues towards the confluence of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola River. Overnight camp is set close to the river, after a long and interesting walks.

Todays walk leads back into human settlement at Tarakot, the adventure follows through isolated farm, and forested area. The trail leads along the river banks then enjoy the last hour climb to reach Tarakot. A large village with historical background, during the time of Malla Kingdom regime. This village was a fortress, and collected tax from the merchants and traders who passed through this route. As this region was the Old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet. Tarakot is an interesting village to explore around, after checking into a lodge or setting the camp. Have time to visit the old Sandul Gompa, situated on the junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River.

Enjoy the last day of the adventurous treks, morning from Tarakot the trail follows to Dunai. The headquarter town of Dolpo district, as the walk start towards through number of smaller farm villages. After few hours of good walk reaching Dunai for lunch stop. Afternoon few hour drive takes you to Jhupal, for the last overnight in Dolpo and Far Western Nepal. At Jhupal overnight in a nice simple lodge after weeks of spending in tented camps.

As time for flight to Nepalgunj city airport, bidding farewell to the trekking staff, mule driver, and porters. A short walk to Jhupal airport, as the small aircraft reach Jhupal airport. Then get on board in a small aircraft for short scenic flight to Nepalgunj with grand views of Western Himalaya range of peaks. On reaching Nepalgunj Airport for connecting flight to Kathmandu, at Nepalgunj taking a bigger airplane. During 50 minutes of more enjoy the panorama of the Himalayan peaks, as it land at Kathmandu airport. On arrival at Kathmandu domestic airport, a short drive leads you to your respective hotels. Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities.

How difficult is Lower Dolpo Trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhill, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhill. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty. The walk is straightforward without much difficulties, as long one takes it slowly. The only tough is crossing the Baga-La and Numa-La Pass with steel uphill and downhill. But walking slow and having much short rest will overcome the difficulties.

Is Lower Dolpo a popular trekking destination?

Lower Dolpo & Phoksundo Lake, is not as popular as other trekking regions, due to its remote location. Only few groups of trekkers seldom visit in the good season. The other reason is the facilities of lodge accommodation and food are not available only in few large villages. Needs to carry camping gear and food for the whole trip.

Are there facilities for electricity, internets and WI-FI?

All lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Some lodges offer free Wi-Fi and Internet services while few places might charge extra. But the connection in some places can be disturbing and takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets. But away from villages, trekkers need to carry a portable solar panel, can fit on the back-pack for personal use.
