Tamang Heritage Trail trekking is quite different and a unique short adventure from other popular treks. Take you around the hidden corners of the Central Himalayas in between the Ganesh and Langtang Himal ranges. It is an exciting and impressive country walk from one traditional village to another beautiful and cultural location.

Trekkers can enjoy the immense local culture and customs of the native Tamang people. Tamang are the indigenous mountain tribes of Langtang and Ganesh Himal, as well as around the mid-east and central Nepal. The Tamang also inhabits the hills that flank the Kathmandu Valley and other parts of Nepal from east to mid-west. Extending to the north and south, the Tamang is also called themselves by the name of Lama.

The Tamang are one of the largest Tibeto-Burman ethnic groups in the Kingdom of Nepal. In the Tibetan language, the word for Tamang means “Horse Soldier” or cavalry, which provides an idea about their past occupation. Today, the Tamang’s are farmers who raise livestock and work as mountain guides and porters.
They are also renowned as natural mountaineers, second to the Sherpa in mountaineering skills.

Tamang practice Tibetan Lamaism and the Bon religion of pre-Buddhist and have their tribal language. Much similar to the language of the Sherpa and other hill tribes, Gurung and Thakali of the northwest. Tamang Heritage Trail Trek Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport received by staff and guide and for a short drive to your hotels. Situated in the hub of Kathmandu city, around Thamel an exciting location. After checking into your rooms with refreshment our guides will brief regarding the treks. Evening a welcome dinner in a nice Nepalese restaurant to get familiar with the culture and Nepali food.

Morning after breakfast, an exciting tour of Nepalese culture and historical tour around Nepal's landmarks and World Heritage Sites. Rest of the day after an interesting tour, with time for trek preparations.

Depart from the hotel after a good breakfast for Langtang Valley Trek begins with morning drive on the main highway. Heading beyond the city and the valley towards Trisuli River for possible lunch stop. Afternoon drive heads on winding uphill to cooler mid-hills and farm village and towns. To enter Dhunche, the headquarter town of Rasuwa district and Langtang Himal area and the entrance of Langtang National Park. From here on winding downhill for few hours to Syabrubesi for first overnight of the trek. A nice village almost a size of small town, Syabrubesi is the gateways for various adventures to Langtang Valley.
As well as to Gosainkunda holy lake, and Ganesh Himal, including Tamang Heritage Trail. It is also the main route to Nepal and Tibet, China borders towards north through Rasuwagadhi and Kyirong. At Syabrubesi check into a nice and simple lodge accommodation. Have time to explore around Syabrubesi and observe the local Tamang people cultures and activities.

From Syabrubesi, after good breakfast, first day walk begins following the trail past Syabrubesi towards west. Then the route leads away from the main motorable road, as the walk continues through farm terraced.

A slow climb reaches Ronga Bhanjyang facing stunning views of the Ganesh Himal and Gosainkunda ranges with Goljung valley. After an hour, the route descends to Goljung Valley, for lunch stop. Afternoon walk leads to Gatlang, is a large village of the Tamang. On arrival greeted with traditional welcome and transfer to a nice simple lodge or in a homestay cottage. The Home Stay program run and managed by the village communities, where travelers can experience the local customs with a distinct culture. Afternoon explore the village steeped with age-old cultures and heritage way of farm life.

Gatlang is an impressive and the largest Tamang Village of Rasuwa district, the houses are built with stones. On rest day immerse within the local customs and culture of the Tamang inhabitants. At Gatlang, explore the Parvati Kund and then old monastery of great religious and cultural interest. Rest of the day enjoy the mountain views and observe the traditional farm life; as well as interact with the Tamang natives.

After an exciting and interesting time at Gatlang, bidding farewell to the villagers. Then the walk follows to Tatopani, the route heads downhill past several Chortens, Mani walls, and dense forest. Slowly the trail leads to Thambuchet, and Chilime with a calm, serene lake. The huge pond formed by the dam of Chilime Hydropower. From climb towards farm terraces, to cross a suspension bridge, then reach Gonggang Village. An ideal spot for lunch at Gonggang village, afternoon walk of few hours leads to gradual climb reaching at Tatopani. The name Tatopani is for hot-spring, in Nepali language, existed before the huge earthquake of 2015. At present the source of hot-spring is destroyed, but the name of the village still remains as Tatopani. Enjoy the comfort of a nice simple lodge with local meals for dinner. Have time to explore around this interesting village with beautiful surrounding scenery.

From Tatopani, the trail leads into forest with gradual ups and downs. Then walk towards a lovely area of Brimdang, after two hours of trekking. From here few hours leads to a steady climb, reaching on top of Nagethali Hill. The highest point of the trek, enjoy the lunch, along with spectacular panorama of the Himalayan ranges. The view includes Ganesh, and Langtang Himal with peaks of Tibet across the borders. At Nagethali visit the small monastery, and then walk downhill to Thuman for overnight halt. A nice Tamang Village greeted with traditional hospitality, evening, enjoy the songs and dance of strong Tibetan influence, performed by the village cheerful young ladies of Thuman village.

After Thuman walk leads to Briddim, the last village around the Tamang Heritage Trail. Located across the valley by the Bhote Koshi River, the trail follow on a gentle trail. Then walk downhill to Timure, situated on the main trade route of Nepal and Tibet. Possible lunch stops, afternoon a steep climb to a ridge, facing views of the snow peaks. Then walk into lovely rhododendrons, pines, and oaks forest to reach Briddim. A nice and typical Tamang village of strong Tibetan cultural heritage. Enjoy the last overnight around the Tamang Heritage Trail before heading towards Syabrubesi to end the trek.

Morning from Briddim Village walk downhill on the winding path, the trail follows along the river banks. This will be the last day of walking to Syabrubesi so enjoy walking at your own easy pace. After few hours reaching back at Syabrubesi, for last overnight, around Tamang Villages of Rasuwa and Langtang Himal region.

Morning after breakfast, an exciting drive back to Kathmandu on the same interesting highway. On arrival in the heart of the city, check into your nice hotel rooms, rest of the day at leisure.

Last day in Kathmandu and Nepal, after a great experience on Langtang Valley Trekking. As time for the international flight transfer to Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport. Then bid farewell to the guide, staff as you enter the airport terminal for homeward bound flight, or to next port of call.

Do we need permits for Tamang Heritage Trail Trek?

The permits required for this short scenic adventure are TIMS (Trekking Information Management Systems). Includes Langtang National Park entrance fees, which will be obtained by the local company.
When you book for this trek, the permits will be ready by the time you depart for the treks.

What age group can join on Tamang Heritage Trail trek?

All age group can join on this short and cultural scenic country walks. From families with children to elderly people, but all needs to be in good physically shape and in good health. As the walk leads to steep uphill for few hours. On this treks, trekkers do not have to worry about catching High Altitude Sickness.

When did the Tamang tribes migrated to Nepal?

The history of Tamang migration to Nepal and across the Himalayas, originally from inner Mongolia. Then came to Nepal high Himalayas through Tibet, around 5,000 years ago, when Kathmandu Valley was still a huge lake. This is why, the Tamang are largely settled around the hills that surround the Kathmandu Valley. Before they were horsemen and cavalry, and change their profession as farmers and rearing livestock. Taming’s are also good artist as painters, wood craftsmanship, and music and in various sports and athletics. 

Are there facilities of electricity and internets, WI-FI?

 

Nearly all the villages and lodges, have electricity run by Hydro or Solar Powers. Trekkers can enjoy the facilities, charging electronic items, as well with Internet and Wi-Fi services. But some smaller places like Tatopani and Thuman, the internet and WI-FI, are quite slow and disturbing. Due to weather and landscape wise, other places runs well with cell phone or internets.
